about

This version of Daniel Figgis' "Catnapping 1992" was mastered onto 78 rpm shellac disc and digitized off of a Silvertone gramophone player.

The first in a series from Pristinus, the peculiar mission of which is to present contemporary works filtered through the archaic medium of the shellac 78 rpm disc, is Daniel Figgis' “Catnapping 1992.” This single finds the Dublin composer and intermedia artist collaborating with Vincent Doherty in a swirling, eddying piece of music that takes a more guitar-led approach than Figgis’ mythic “Skipper,“ but is no less dream-like in its impression.

Regarding the b-side, there’s an affected quaintness — if not outright sacrilege — to the idea of taking a track this beautiful and presenting it on a medium that by its very nature robs it of the dynamism and heights it reaches in the stereo mix, but there’s an admitted, somewhat satisfying tradeoff in getting to hear what an artist as forward-thinking as Figgis would sound like if our recording technology had not advanced in the last 100 years. And for the few people out there lucky enough to snag one of the actual shellac 78s, “Catnapping 1992” should offer a unique tactile experience for the 21st century audient.
